KENTUCKY SOCIETY OF NATURAL HISTORY
BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
KENLAKE STATE RESORT PARK
October 26 – 28, 2007
The KSNH Board meeting was held
on Sunday morning, October 28, at 7 AM at the Kenlake State Resort Park.
Those present were Pat and Berl Meyer, Margarette Perkins, Chris and
Mary Alice Bidwell, Wally Roberts, Joe Settles, James Kiser, Cherry
Baker, Pete and Mary Jane Glauber.
Minutes of the spring meeting and the treasurer’s report were
distributed to the group. After discussion, the minutes and the
treasurer’s report were both accepted as presented.
There was a discussion of the coordinator changes and the direction the
KSNH is going. Some members pointed out the advantages of coordinating
our efforts with other nature organizations.
New business –
1) James Kiser emphasized the need to require all scholarship recipients
to do a talk or have some sort of involvement at one of the conferences.
This could be done with several speakers covering different topics which
might be appealing to more people. Wally Roberts will take care of this
aspect of the grant awards.
2) Berl Meyer presented an analysis of the use of the KSNH web site.
Statistics show it is definitely being used.
3) Joe Settles brought up the use of magnetic KSNH Logo signs for
conference field trips during car pooling. Berl Meyer had previously
purchased two of these signs using his own funds and was seen by Joe
Settles and James Kiser, who liked them very much. Berl Meyer agreed to
check on a price for ten magnetic signs and to order them if the price
was right.
4) Conferences -
a) Kingdom Come State Park/Benham - April 25-27, 2008, preconference
April 24 – (plans almost complete, have 30 rooms, plan 2 meals in
package price for conference, continental breakfast, café open for
lunch, campground available at Kingdom Come)
b) Natural Bridge – September 26 – 27, 2008 – have contract
c) Reelfoot Lake – Spring 2009 – Wally Roberts is to work on getting
this scheduled into a 3 day event – 3rd weekend in April is a good date
if have to go to spring. A suggestion was made that we investigate
having a joint meeting with the Tennessee Native Plant Society.
d) Pine Mountain Settlement School – Fall 2009 – Joe Settles is to take
care of this
NOTE: Wally & Karen Roberts along with Berl and Pat Meyer made a
scouting trip to Reelfoot Lake after the Kenlake Fall Conference. They
discovered spring is very expensive because the motels cater to the
fishermen and have package deals we cannot afford. Dates for Reelfoot
and Pine Mountain Settlement School conferences for 2009 will need to be
switched. Pine Mountain Settlement School will be Spring 2009 and
Reelfoot Lake will be Fall 2009 – dates to be announced for both soon.
e) Shawnee State Park – Spring 2010 (last weekend April)
f) Shakertown – Fall 2010 – Herb Zimmerman is to check on availability
f) Carter Caves – Spring 2011
g) Cumberland Falls – Fall 2011
There being no further business, we adjourned at 8:40 AM.
